Today in Cis Privilege: 28 girls in one class in Swedish school underwent female genital mutilation

The shocking scale of female genital mutilation (FGM) in a Swedish school, where every single girl in one class had been subjected to the procedure, has been revealed.

School health services in Norrköping, eastern Sweden, discovered 60 cases of FGM since March, according to the Norrköpings Tidningar newspaper.

In the class where all of the girls had FGM performed on them, 28 were subjected to infibulation – the most extreme kind where the clitoris and labia are complete cut away, and the genitals are sewn to leave a small vaginal opening.

Three Cotati residents were arrested Thursday on suspicion of pimping a 16-year-old girl in California, Arizona and Oregon over the past three months.

The investigation began on June 11 when the girl and her mother informed police about the alleged human trafficking, Cotati Police Chief Michael Parish said.

The girl said the suspects kept the money from the human trafficking and that she had sex multiple times with one of the suspects, 38-year-old Abdelaziz Jamal Thomas, Parish said.

Today in Cis Privilege: Male therapist sentenced to 16 days in jail for sexually abusing female patient with severe mental health issues

A behavioral health therapist who pleaded guilty to patient abuse and unlawful restraint for sexually abusing a former patient who has severe mental health issues, was chastised by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Timothy McCormick before he sentenced him to eight weekends in jail.

“What were you thinking?” McCormick asked Gregory Markovich after the victim spoke emotionally for 45 minutes about how she has been unable to cope after the incident last September. “You can tell this victim has serious underlying issues and you were her social worker and was aware of it. What you engaged in is beyond comprehension.”

Markovich, 63, of Conneaut, said he had no explanation and began an affair with the victim after he was no longer her therapist.

He said they lived together for a year-and-a-half and he wanted to help her.

“You took advantage of her,” McCormick said. “You knew how troubled she was and didn’t have the ability to make an educated consensual decision to develop a relationship. Shame on you.”

Today in Cis Privilege: Iranian child bride faces execution for killing the man she was forced to marry

Razieh Ebrahimi was forced to marry at the age of 14, became a mother at 15, and killed her husband at 17. Now at 21, she is on Iran’s death row.

Ebrahimi, who shot dead her hubsand while he was sleeping, faces imminent execution, despite international laws prohibiting execution for crimes committed by juveniles.

Human Rights Watch, has urged Iran’s judiciary to halt the execution. Earlier this week, Ebrahimi’s lawyer also asked judges to consider a retrial, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

“I married our neighbour’s son when I was only 14 because my dad insisted,” Ebrahimi was quoted as telling officials working on her case, according to Mehr. “My dad insisted I should marry him because he was educated and was working as a teacher. I was 15 when I gave birth to my child.” Her child is believed to be now six years old.

“I didn’t know who I am or what is life all about,” she said soon after being arrested. “My husband mistreated me. He used any excuse to insult me, even attacking me physically.”

Today in Cis Privilege: She was 17 and forced to have sex with 10 men a day

The scantily dressed teenager stood on the hotel balcony taking nervous drags from her cigarette. She’d been in downtown Ottawa for almost two weeks, forced to have sex with a long line of men.

But on that warm summer night in 2011, one man standing outside her hotel room door had something very different in mind.

Ottawa police Det. Shane Henderson had received a tip from hotel staff about a 17-year-old girl they believed was a prostitute.

So the unassuming policeman did something that would change both their lives and pull back the curtain on the human-trafficking industry in the nation’s capital: He knocked on the door.

These are the stories of how the constable and the teenager met at a Cooper Street hotel and how their journey together would lead to Canada’s first human trafficking conviction involving an adult who had placed a child into prostitution.

Today in Cis Privilege: Gang trafficked at least 120 women into London where they were raped

The Hungarian-based gang trafficked at least 120 women into London where they were raped, beaten and forced to work in brothels across the capital.

The six gang members — led by Indian-born Vishal Chaudhary — are among 25 criminals convicted or jailed in the past month alone in a series of operations against Eastern European human trafficking gangs targeting London.

Police say there are an increasing number of joint inquiries with countries such as Poland, Hungary and Romania into prostitution and trafficking gangs.

Scotland Yard said there are at least seven live inquiries into crime groups bringing women into London.

In one operation with Romanian police, the first of its kind, 12 Romanian nationals were jailed for 89 years in their own country for bringing women to Britain to work in prostitution.

In another case earlier this week a Russian madam who ran a “high class” escort agency was jailed for eight years at Southwark crown court. Tatiana Shmyrova, 45, exploited a talented former Bulgarian athlete after she was lured to Britain with the promise of a new life working as a tour guide in London.

The Chaudhary gang trafficked more than 120 women from Hungary into the UK.
